Interventions with aggressive and delinquent youth
Interventions with aggressive and delinquent youth have, with rare exceptions, narrowly focused on limited aspects of the family-delinquency nexus, such as the role of structured family management in reducing aggressive behavior. Delinquency, however, involves not only parenting processes but also reciprocal effects, family context, and other dimensions of adolescent life. We next consider the implications of the research reviewed above for intervention. We also review the existing treatment outcome research on families of antisocial and delinquent youth. Paralleling the review of research on family processes and delinquency, we examine interventions that target parenting, processes, suggest how reciprocal effects might be acknowledged in family treatment, consider how family context can be addresses to improve treatment outcomes, and briefly review interventions that address the multidimensional nature of delinquency.
